Carol J. Clover came up with the term Final Girl in her book title ' Men, Women and Chainsaws: Gender in the Modern Horror Film which was published in 1992. Her theory suggests that there is commonly a female left at the end who survived against the monster/villain.
Traits of The 'Final Girl':
- Virginal - The final girl is commonly a virgin or started out in the film as one. This plays on the whole innocent girl type when really she is the one is survives in the end.
- Smart - She always escapes the villains attempts a couple of times before battling against him/her and defeating them.
- Strong - A lot of the time the final girl replaces the hero in horror films.
- Feminine - A lot of the final girl characters are portrayed as girly even though in the end they kill/fight the villain which a girly girl would never do.
