Narrative

This is the storyline for our film in which we are making a trailer:

Persephone was six years old when she was admitted into the mental hospital after her parents died in a mysterious home invasion. When the police arrived at the scene they found Persephone shaking and repeating the phrase “The monsters did it”. Now, 12 years later and aged 18, she is being released. The only real friends she has are the girls from next door, Brooke and Cecilia, with whom she was close to. They visited her throughout her treatment at the hospital and built a strong friendship with her.

Brooke and Cecilia are called on the day of her release to come and collect Persephone. The doctor tells Brooke over the phone that she needs a normal, stable life. The sisters go and pick Persephone up and think that she looks better but the 12 years of treatment have made her numb and slow to the world. After her parents died Persephone inherited everything they owned. When they arrive back home, Brooke tells her that “their parents have gone away and suggested they stay with Persephone” at her house, which coincidentally coincides with Brooke and Cecilia’s house being renovated.

The girls start to slip into a normal evening by having a sleepover like they used to. They play spin the bottle and start to have a fun time with Persephone finally looking as if she is back to normal. The next day Persephone is pouring herself a drink and sees the monsters, saying they cut her hand but Brooke and Cecilia are convinced that she just dropped the glass by accident and cut herself on a shard. Strange things begin to happen in the house and next door. Things like: music randomly playing, lights flickering/burning out, doors slamming and they wake up with scratches on their arms. Brooke and Cecilia start to believe Persephone that there is a paranormal presence in the house. The girls start to witness the above events with their own eyes and apologize for not believing Persephone. After this, weird things also start to happen in town such as people disappearing and animals being killed and mutilated. The three girls believe that the spirits are doing this too.

The girls try to get rid of the spirits using sage and confrontation, but they don’t work. Persephone becomes frantic and sees the spirits in every reflection. She tries to cut out her own eyes in an effort to make it all stop but the girls stop her. The girls try to help and talk to her but before they realise there were never any spirits and Persephone actually killed her own parents (and is mentally disturbed) she kills Cecilia. Brooke tries to save Cecilia but it’s too late, she must run. There is one last meeting between Brooke and Persephone. Brooke tries to reach out to Persephone but just as she thinks she has got through, Persephone cuts her eyes making her blind. She tries to run away but gets run over by a car and instantly dies.

Persephone goes back to the house and cleans all the blood and mess from Cecilia’s body. She eerily goes and sits cross legged on the sofa with a small smile on her face. The police sirens and flashing lights come closer so she goes and sits in the cupboard under the stairs hugging her knees. The exact spot the police found her in 12 years ago when she killed her parents. When the police find her she is repeating the phrase “The monsters did it”. The end...

My partner and I have also thought of a name for ‘the monster’, the false villain of the film. We decided on “Sedah” which is the backwards spelling for Hades. This links to our theme of mirrors and reflections as well as the name Persephone (Greek mythology).

Narrative Brainstorming

This is me and my partner brainstorming narrative, character, names etc. The purple pen is my writing and the black pen is Hibah's.

Scripting for Trailer

This is the script for our trailer:

Scripting for Trailer

(A shot of two houses next to one another has come into the frame)

*a ringing phone can be heard*

(The shot has changed to show Anmol picking up the phone)

Anmol: Hello?

Doctor (narration/voiceover): She’s ready (the shot has changed to the girls travelling to pick her up). We have done all we can for her. She is 18 now and has been here for 12 years. I think what she really needs right now is to live a normal life with a constant routine and friends around her.

Anmol (narration/voiceover): Thank you. We are on our way. (Shot of girls all in the car)

Sumiyyah (narration/voiceover): We’re gonna look after you now (as shot changes to Sydney’s eye in car mirror). This will be fun

(Close-up shot of Sydney’s face with no emotion)

Anmol: Just like old times, remember (shots of girls at sleepover).

(Glass breaks)

Sydney: (screams)

Anmol: What happened?! What’s wrong?! (See’s Sydney on floor, crying with the bloody hand)

Sumiyyah (voice over): (Now in the room) its okay, we won’t leave you. The house is getting re vamped so we thought we would stay here. Don’t worry we’ll stay... (This phrase echoes on)

(The shots now go through a sequence of paranormal theme, creepy old music plays)

*Heavy breathing*

Anmol: What the... (Door slams and she screams)

Sumiyyah: There is something wrong with the house, maybe Persephone’s not crazy, maybe spirits did kill her parents...Maybe it wasn’t an accident?

Anmol: (shot of Anmol looking into renovated house) Hugh? (She calls for the builder) Hugh?! (She leaves the house mumbling) He must have gone home early.

(Shot to Sumiyyah in the other house reading on sofa, Sydney is in kitchen)
Sumiyyah: You ok? (Shouting)

(Lights starting to flicker in living room, Sumiyyah looks scared but lights go back to normal and she leaves)

(Shot of Sumiyyah sleeping in bed, suddenly waking up)

Sumiyyah: (POV shot as from Sumiyyah’s eyes as she sees the scratches on her arms. She breaths heavily then screams & whimpers).

Anmol: We’ve got to do something!!! I won’t let this thing, hurt my sisters (shots of the girls trying to banish the demon) (Sage)

Sydney: Why does it matter it’s already won, It killed my parents and now it’s going to kill us. (Shot of Sydney seeing monster in her reflection).

Anmol: WE’VE GOT TO GET OUT!!! NOW!!! (Anmol running with weapon in hand on street)

(black shots chase her)

Sydney: (in cupboard) the monster did it. The monster did it (she repeats this and it echo’s on as a whisper over the name of the film)
